Design
A Design/Build Construction Company
We offer a fast and affordable design service, taking your ideas and turning them into beautiful efficient green structures. Sketchup programs are used to create 3D models for ease of modification over email, and we finish with CAD/Sketchup building plan sets. The next phase, if applicable, is guiding the plan set through engineering and making any last changes to suit the engineers calculations. The final design product is then ready for submittal for permits (if we are mounting on a foundation).
The design process:
Initial consultation overviewing your interests and needs.
Cascadia Homesteads will then conceptualize your project into a 3D model.
Followed by editing and refining of your chosen layouts, window and door placements, and exterior/interiors options.
Next we create a unique set of plans with expanded interior/exterior 3D models and views with scaled CAD structural building details.
After we have a finished set of plans, we are able to bid your project and schedule the build.
Shop Built and Alternative Construction
We build at our shop undercover to keep materials free from weather impact during the construction process. We find incredible efficiencies building in a shop environment with all are tools and supplies ready and at hand. We save time and fuel by not building in the field and we are committed to doing as much as possible from our shop without bringing the construction to your site.
Cascadia Homesteads structures can be designed to utilize alternative products such as solar and wind energy, rain water catchment, greywater bioremediation, and humanure systems. Typically our projects are designed to plug into standard systems that are already in place at the house site, but we can design off grid stand-alone projects as well.
Permaculture Influence
Permaculture is our guiding philosophy; it is defined as simulating and directly utilizing the patterns and features witnessed in natural ecosystems. The best long-term systems truly support one another and all aid each other in maintaining a proper balance leading to harmony, diversity and resilience.
We attempt to maximize these design patterns when we place structures on land, build habitat for wildlife, and create gardens and raise plants to feed us and mitigate our impacts and footprints.
We can build a beautiful and regenerative future in how we house and develop our lives, of which we have an integral role to play. We can create this future by mimicking what we learn from these wild and natural ecosystems, weaving a strong resilient relationship, of which we are the steward and caretaker.

Excavation - Orcas Island Only
Working with our Islands glorious natural features, we craft beauty into the landscape and keep the elemental flows in focus with our Permaculture mindset.
We rarely ever use burn piles on our projects, but rather compost, chip and use materials from clearing land(for homes) in creative ways. Returning carbon back to the soil, and minimizing our footprints and impacts.
We have a skid steer and excavator and years of experiencing working with soils, trees, and the land.
We enjoy working with bolders and sculpting rock walls, creative placements of boulders and shaping the land for use in food production, beauty, and play.
We have a selection of attachments to aid in land work including:
-Dozer blade
-Various augers up to 24" for tree planting and concrete footing work
-Vibrating 8' Wide heavy roller for packing gravel and crafting roads
-Forklift forks for moving heavy materials, pallets, logs and lifting to second floors and speeding construction

Cabins and Outbuildings
Cabins and Outbuildings
Built to universal building codes, meeting or exceed Washington State energy codes(insulation values).
Up to 12’ wide at the walls and up to 14’ at eaves, or 14' wide bodies with SIP panel roofs installed on site with large eaves/overhangs, creating additional storage and roof coverage for firewood, bicyles, kayaks, saunas, and more...Up to 40’ in length
One or more buildings can be designed to interlock forming larger structures and single family homes.
If needed, on Orcas Island only, we do offer site-built general contracting services if the design doesn't allow for a shop built frame.
Cabins can also be two level structures with lighter weight sections craned together on site. There are many creative uses of flat roofs including: roof top greenhouses and gardens, as well as bedroom pods, saunas, yoga/meditiation spaces, or writing studios.
Our cabins can be mounted on engineered concrete piers and footing, or rest on simple paving stone. We utilize pressure treated beam skids up to 24' and steel I-beams for lenghts up to 40'.
Commonly used as offices, guest houses, art studios, writer’s retreats, extra
bedrooms, yoga and meditation studios, and work shops.
Outbuildings
Simple shells with attractive sidings, potentially matching your main home, and almost any use you may need we can build. Open floor plans for adaptable use with open framing to detailed finish carpentry, we can develop your personal homestead to support your lifestyle and bring you closer to the natural environment around us here in the San Juans.
Including: timber greenhouses, saunas, storage sheds, bathhouses, and agricultural buildings

Site-Built Custom Homes and General Contracting
Beyond our shop built and delivered structures we do take on various construction projects on Orcas Island from Custom homes to decks. We generally don’t build homes larger than 2,000 sq ft as a rule.
If you already have a set of plans and engineering completed we can competitively bid and deliver a fixed price for completing your project.
We’re a small company with a wide range of skills and talents from concrete to fine finish work. We do it all.
Our projects are built by our own crew and by sub-contractors we have good relationships with. Our job sites are a place of positivity and we maintain and keep to this principal, bringing and imbibing a good energy into our projects.
